Russell Liebowitz here, author and creator of http://www.MeetLiebow.com. My old friend and roommate from college came in town this past weekend. I took him out fishing all day on Saturday. I wanted to put him on his 1st Snook or Tarpon. Started out trying to catch bait on some grass flats using Jack Mackerel, bread, and menhaden oil. The bait was scarce. My friend got a lesson on "how to chum." Unfortunately, it was a long lesson since the bait would not cooperate. So, we traveled onto our next spot.
Finally, we located some nice size bait along the beach surf. Two throws of the net and our Live Well was full. We went to our 1st fishing spot of the day which was right off Eggmont Key here in Tampa, Fl area. Eggmont Key is one of the most popular fishing destinations on the West Coast of Florida. My friend got busted on his first toss!! He pulled in a small "Red Grouper." Ten minutes later he pulled in a 3 foot "Black Tip Shark." I was able to get a bend in my friend's rod. That's a relief. No skunk! Now, we were ready for the real deal...Tarpon!!!!
We situated on the South side of Eggmont Key with the tide going out (-.04). When we arrived at Eggmont there were about 75 boats already lined up with the same idea we had. The crabs were not flowing when we got there so we threw out some Threadfins until the crabs decided to show. The boat in front of us hooked up! Now, my juices were flowing. This was a good sign. You want to see other boats in action. The crabs started to show and we scooped about 15 of them. We started our drift and hoped for the best.
I wish I had a better conclusion for you. No Bites...No Tarpon. It just wasn't our day. I have been Tarpon fishing 10 times this year (2009) with no success. Either I'm bad luck or I'm doing something wrong? Anyways, I'll be at it again this week. I hooked a 100lb+ Tarpon last year and it hasn't weared off yet. It's addictive!! By owning my online business at home I'm able to take time off and finally enjoy life. I'm able to earn more money than I was working in Corporate America 40+ hrs/week.
